Project: Podcasting

“A Podcast is when people talk and record themselves so others can listen.” There are many different types of podcasts, ranging from funny conversations between friends to serious news stories created by reporters. All podcasts have one thing in common: they are meant to be listened to. Anyone can create a podcast about their passion or interest. In this lesson, we will explore what a podcast is, its history, and how you can create one too. Listen to the Podcast About Podcasts with headphones to learn about and discover the different types of podcasts.

1 | Listen To Podcasts

The best way to get familiar with the different types of podcasts is to find ones that you like. Check out some of the suggested podcasts on this page and/or visit NPR’s Kids & Family Podcast Page.

2 | What Kind Of Podcast?

Determine who your target audience is, what the objective of your podcast will be, and whether or not it will be fiction or non-fiction. Remember to choose something you're passionate about so you can have fun along the way.

3 | Planning & Scripting

Figure out the structure of your podcast and create an outline. Write a script or do research to develop a plan before you record.

4 | Practice

Practice the scripted sections of your podcast by reading through the text. Use vocal inflection and pauses to make your storytelling or conversation sound natural and engaging.

5 | Record

Find a quiet area to record. Test the microphones to ensure a good level, and listen to a sample recording. Don’t worry if you make a mistake—record three claps and try again to create a new take.

6 | Clean

Use Soundtrap’s Vocal Cleanup tool and effects to make the conversation easier to hear.

7 | Edit

Cut the regions and paste them together to create a cohesive recording. Remember to zoom in to find the best spot to split the regions, and aim to make your cuts sound natural.

8 | Add Detail

Add intro and outro music to your podcast using original music or sounds from the loop library. You can also use sound effects to immerse the listener in your story.

9 | Share

Export your podcast and upload it to a platform like Soundcloud or Spotify for Podcasters. Play it for friends and get their feedback.
