FF 1.4 | Reading Chord Charts
4 Reading Chord Charts (1 Day)
Objectives
Learn how to read three string chord charts.
Procedure
Introduction to Chord Charts: Watch the “Reading Chord Charts” video as a class and discuss how to interpret the charts.
Sample Problems: Draw a chord chart on the board or us a freeze frame the video and ask students about the finger, fret, and string placement for individual fret markers.
Worksheet Activity: Have students complete the Guitar Basics Worksheet individually or in partners. Continuously walk around to give immediate feedback, ensuring students are applying the correct techniques and understanding the material.
Feedback and Review: Provide immediate feedback upon worksheet completion, discussing any common mistakes or misunderstandings.
Opening and Closing Activity Ideas
Opening Activities: Start with a brief quiz on the names of guitar strings.
Closing Activities: Display a new chord chart and answer students questions about the finger placement for each marker.
Assessment
Evaluate completed worksheets on-the-spot, providing immediate feedback and correction as needed.
Differentiation
Remediation: Offer additional support by pairing them with more advanced students during the interactive activities, focusing on basic chord charts.
Enrichment: Partner students with more experience with students who need more support. They can also preview the dynamic chord chart page (4.1) and learn about those adapatable shapes.
Notes
Immediate feedback helps in the learning process and I recommend checking students work while they are completing the worksheet. If you spend a little more time making sure students have a solid understanding of chord chart reading, they are going to make less mistakes when it comes to playing their first song.
