PREPARATION

  • Clap along with a metronome as a class.

  • Record students clapping with a metronome and play it back so they can objectively give themselves feedback.

  • Put students in pairs or small groups and work on keeping a steady beat together to music they select.

  • Have students practice keeping a steady beat with the pad drumming practice video.

  • Use the mute function on the computer to test students’ ability to maintain the pulse of the music they’ve selected using Youtube.

  • Use a metronome at a slow tempo to isolate the ability to maintain a steady beat.

Assessment

  • Test students by having them perform the steady beat test in front of the teacher.

  • They can also record a performance along with the steady beat test.

  • Give feedback for the assessment in person.

  • Have students identify their “time tendency” Do they push or pull the beat? Do they speed up or slow down during the periods of metronomic silence?
