2.2 Reading Grooves // Lesson Plan


LESSON OBJECTIVE

  • Students will be able to read, play, and record a drum pattern from the groove library.

PREPARATION

  • Read through a groove from the groove library as a class.

    • Highlight the importance of the practice process.

    • Play the groove one count at a time.

    • Go through instrument by instrument.

    • Slowly speed it up to the target tempo.

  • Have students choose a groove from the library.

  • Check their choice to make sure that playing it is within their ability.

  • Have students practice the groove with songs that they like and along with drumless tracks.

Assessment

  • Informally grade students while they play their grooves on desks or paper pads.

  • Instruct students to record their drum groove over the project template.

  • Assess the recording of their drum groove using the piano roll in person.

  • Compare the note events with the subdivision grid in the piano roll.

  • Quantize the performance in front of the student and A/B the quantized and unquantized performance to see which notes moved the most.

  • Have the student evaluate their recording against the rubric.
