2.1 Basic Backbeat // Lesson Plan
LESSON OBJECTIVE
Students will be able to perform and record the basic backbeat drum groove using the MIDI or typing keyboard.

PREPARATION
Watch the breakdown of the basic backbeat drum groove on the Learn tab.
Use the pad drumming video on the Practice tab as a class and during individual practice to help students gain finger independence.
Handout printed paper pads and/or have students play on their desks and play the basic groove along to student selected songs.
Play along to the drumless tracks as a class using paper pads.
Show students how to use the MIDI keyboard to trigger the kick drum, snare, and hi hat sounds in Soundtrap.
Have students practice the basic groove using headphones.
Unplug headphones and have an electronic drum circle where different groups of students play single instruments together.Give students time to practice recording the basic backbeat grove in Soundtrap.
Make sure that the metronome is on during this practice.
Assessment
Informally assess each student’s ability to count and play the basic backbeat groove using the paper pads before having them move to the DAW.
Have students record four measures of the basic backbeat groove along with the recording.
Assess their recording in person by looking at the piano roll together.
Give students an opportunity to reflect on their own performance by judging their notes against the subdivision grid.
