PREPARATION

  • Explain how this lesson is a preparation for key drumming by playing examples of key drumming.

  • Play student selected music and identify the subdivision level in the hi hat and have them listen for the rhythm of the kick drum.

  • Practice reading rhythms as a class using the key drumming finger assignments for the hi hat and kick drum.

Assessment

  • Have students count and play their rhythms along with a metronome for the test.

  • This can be done in person or via a recording

  • Give prompt and meaningful feedback regarding the quality of the steady beat, evenness of the subdivision, and accuracy of the rhythm reading.
