PREPARATION
Explain how this lesson is a preparation for key drumming by playing examples of key drumming.
Play student selected music and identify the subdivision level in the hi hat and have them listen for the rhythm of the kick drum.
Practice reading rhythms as a class using the key drumming finger assignments for the hi hat and kick drum.
Assessment
Have students count and play their rhythms along with a metronome for the test.
This can be done in person or via a recording
Give prompt and meaningful feedback regarding the quality of the steady beat, evenness of the subdivision, and accuracy of the rhythm reading.
