PREPARATION

  • Watch the video on how to read beat maps together.

  • Read beat maps together as a class.

  • Give students the practice process

    • Understand the rhythm by counting and clapping without a steady beat

    • Find the bassline tempo and count and clap the rhythm with a steady beat

    • Slowly speed the metronome up until the target tempo has been reached.

  • Have students compose their own beat map rhythms and perform them as a class.

  • Put students into partners or small groups and have them compose beat maps for each other to clap.

  • Have students choose a rhythm for each subdivision level to perform in the test.

  • Examples can be assigned for students that are having difficulty performing the rhythm or that need more of a challenge.
The tempo can be altered to adjust for student ability.

Assessment

  • Have students count and clap their rhythms along with a metronome for the test.

  • This can be done in person or via a recording

  • Give prompt and meaningful feedback regarding the quality of the steady beat, evenness of the subdivision, and accuracy of the rhythm reading.
