  • Spell and invert triads as a class.

  • Have students work individually or in partners to complete the triad spelling worksheet in the Write section.

  • Play through the inversion workout video as a class.

  • Give students time to work through this video at their own pace.

  • Walk around and pay close attention to the fingers that are being used for each inversion.

  • Have students write a new chord progression using the Chord Progression organizer (this can be a Save-As project from 3.3/3.4).

  • Give students time to copy the chord progression to the Chord Composition organizer.

  • Instruct students to record the drum groove, bass line, and chordal part of their composition.

  • REMIND THEM TO START RECORDING AT THE BEGINNING OF MEASURE 3.

Assessment

  • Check the Chord Progression organizer to see if the chords chosen follow the rules of chord progression and that the triads are inverted for smooth voice leading.

  • Make sure that the Chord Composition organizer has the same chord spelling and inversions as the Chord Progression organizer.

  • Conference with students individually and check the piano roll of their drum groove, bass line, and chordal part against their organizer.

  • Listen to their compositions together and/or have students present their projects to the class.
