PREPARATION
Watch the walkthrough video in sections as a class. Stop before the practicing triads section.
Solidify student’s understanding of triad spelling using the C major scale by prompting the class to spell triads.
While students are at pianos, have them demonstrate proper playing technique in the right hand by taking the triad shaping and moving it up and down.
Call out different chords in the key of C and have students find the triad shape.
Put students into partners and have them quiz each other on playing root position triads at the piano.
Give students individual time to practice the IV V vi chord progression in the practice tab.
Have students create their chordal part’s rhythm and record it in their graphic organizer.
Give students time to record their chordal part on the template project.
Assessment
Check to make sure that the octave numbers are correct in the graphic organizers.
Check to make sure that the rhythm is the same for each measure in the organizer.
Conference with each student individually and check the piano roll against their organizer.
Check to see if the notes in the chordal part are quantized and if the ends of the notes are trimmed to the correct count.
Listen to the chordal part together and give notes on their chordal part. Here are some things to look for.
Balance between the voices in the chord. You don’t want one voice to beat louder or softer than the others.
Rhythms that are overfly busy.
