5.1 Playing Melodies // Lesson Plan


LESSON OBJECTIVE

  • Students will be able to read and play simple melodies using augmented notation in their right hand.
    Go to Lesson

 

PREPARATION

  • Watch the video on how to read augmented notation in the Learn section.

  • Pass out paper pianos to students.

  • Go through the following practice process using the first example in the Practice section

    • Count & Clap the rhythms.

    • Say & Play the letter names of the pitches with the correct finger.

    • Count & Play the pitches without a steady beat

    • Count & Play the pitches with a steady beat at a slow tempo

    • Slowly speed up the tempo until the target tempo is reached.

  • Assign students a line to prepare for assessment based on their previous note reading experience.

  • Have students practice the melody WITHOUT being able to hear the piano or Noteflight playback.

  • After students have played through a few examples, ask them to change the rhythm or pitches of some of the melodies by ear.

  • Ask some students to share their altered melodies with the class.

  • Have students go through the compose section video to work on writing melodies by ear.

Assessment

  • Have students count and play the assigned example on a MIDI keyboard without headphones.

  • Give them feedback on their steady beat, subdivision, rhythm accuracy, and pitch accuracy.

  • Allow them to play with backing track once they have assessed.
