LESSON OBJECTIVE
Students will be able to write a melodic rhythm with syncopation, repetition, and space.

PREPARATION
Watch the video examples in the Learn section for syncopation, repetition, and space as a class.
Listen to student and teacher selected songs to find examples of syncopation, repetition, and space in the rhythm of vocal and instrument melodies.
Listen to the melodic rhythm improvisation backing track as a class.
Have students tap melodic rhythms at their desk silently while listening to the track together.
Ask for volunteers to share their rhythms with the class.
Have students write a melodic rhythm in the organizer individually or in partners.
Give students time to record a vocal performance of their rhythm on top of the template audio.
Assessment
Check student organizers for the following items:
That the attacks fo the rhythm match up with a single syllable in each word.
The repetition structure exists over the whole phrase.
Students can conference with their projects in individually or in smalls groups, they can present their recordings to the class, or they can perform their rhythm live for the class.
Give immediate and meaningful feedback regarding the presence of the melodic rhythm elements in student’s compositions.
