5.2 Melodic Rhythm // Lesson Plan


LESSON OBJECTIVE

  • Students will be able to write a melodic rhythm with syncopation, repetition, and space.

PREPARATION

  • Watch the video examples in the Learn section for syncopation, repetition, and space as a class.

  • Listen to student and teacher selected songs to find examples of syncopation, repetition, and space in the rhythm of vocal and instrument melodies.

  • Listen to the melodic rhythm improvisation backing track as a class.

  • Have students tap melodic rhythms at their desk silently while listening to the track together.

  • Ask for volunteers to share their rhythms with the class.

  • Have students write a melodic rhythm in the organizer individually or in partners.

  • Give students time to record a vocal performance of their rhythm on top of the template audio.

Assessment

  • Check student organizers for the following items:

    • That the attacks fo the rhythm match up with a single syllable in each word.

    • The repetition structure exists over the whole phrase.

  • Students can conference with their projects in individually or in smalls groups, they can present their recordings to the class, or they can perform their rhythm live for the class.

  • Give immediate and meaningful feedback regarding the presence of the melodic rhythm elements in student’s compositions.
