FF 1.2 | The First Lesson

2 The First Lesson (1 Day)

Objectives

Identify the different parts of the guitar | Demonstrate proper playing position | Understand the importance of handling guitars with care

Procedure

  1. Begin the lesson by explaining the importance of knowing the parts of the guitar and handling the instrument with care.

  2. Show the students a guitar and point out its different parts. Ensure to cover the body, neck, headstock, strings, tuning pegs, and the bridge. Use a guitar in the classroom for a hands-on demonstration or watch the Parts Of The Guitar video in the lesson page.

  3. Discuss the fragility of guitars and the importance of careful handling.

  4. Demonstrate the correct way to pick up and hold the guitar, transitioning between playing and rest positions.

  5. Instruct students to get guitars for the first time and to hold them in rest position when seated.

  6. Practice going between rest position to playing position together.

  7. Ask students to identify guitar parts. by having them to point to parts as you name them.

  8. If there is time, have students use the thumb of their picking hand to play the low E string. Have them use different amounts of pressure to play at different volume levels.

Differentiation

Remediation: For students struggling with guitar parts, provide labeled diagrams for extra practice.

Enrichment: Challenge advanced students to research and present on the materials used in guitar construction and how they affect the instrument's sound. They can also make their own labeled diagram.

Assessment

Informally assess students on their understanding of the parts of the guitar and how to follow the procedures for care and maintenance in the classroom. Highlight positive behaviors and gently correct any improper handling or positioning.

Opening and Closing Activity Ideas

Opening Activity: Have the question “How Does Guitar Make A Sound?” posted on the board while students walk in. Have them write the answer in their practice journal. Discuss how the strings vibrate and move the top of the classical guitar to make sound after students have completed the question.

Closing Activity: Close the lesson with a group reflection on the importance of respecting and taking care of musical instruments.

Notes

Taking extra care in how students interact with the guitars will help create a classroom culture of mindfulness with the instruments. This culture will extend beyond care/maitanence and into practice.
