3.1 Bass Line Rhythm // Lesson Plan


LESSON OBJECTIVE

  • Students will be able to write, play, and record a one note bass line that demonstrates the relationship between the bass instrument and the kick drum.

PREPARATION

  • Watch the bass and kick relationship videos in the Learn section.

  • Listen to teacher and student selected music and identify the different bass and kick relationships together

  • Have students write a drum groove on the organizer along with the template audio in the Record section.

  • Instruct students to compose a bass line using each of the three bass and kick relationships.

  • Allow students to record the drum groove and bass line of their choosing in Soundtrap.

  • Have students trim the end of the note for the bass line to match the organizer.

  • Give students an opportunity to alter the release of their bass note after playback.

  • Show students how to quantize the drum and bass performance.

PROCESS

  • Check the organizers for the following errors:

    • Symmetry and contrast of drum patterns.

    • Bass and kick relationship rules are followed.

    • Duration notation is used correctly.

  • Grade students individually in person or allow students to present their projects to the class.

  • Go over the rubric with the student and check the accuracy of their performance against their rubric.
