3.2 The Piano Keyboard // Lesson Plan


LESSON OBJECTIVE

  • Students will be able to draw a piano keyboard, identify the letter names of the natural notes on the piano keyboard, and play notes in the extended C major pentascale.

PREPARATION

  • Watch the anatomy of a keyboard and how to draw a piano keyboard videos in the Learn section as a class or individually.

  • Have students draw a piano keyboard and label the note names. Turn it into a competition to see who can draw the fastest labeled piano

  • Demonstrate how to use the musictheory.net exercise page to practice their ability to know the names of the notes on the piano keyboard.

  • Show students how to get into good playing posture and have them get into the C major pentascale position.

  • Call out note names to the class and have student play the corresponding note with their left hand.

  • Give students time to practice playing the notes from the C position flashcards.

  • Make sure they are saying the name of the note BEFORE playing the corresponding note with their left hand.

  • Put students in partners or small groups to quiz eachother on the notes in the C major pentascale.

Assessment

  • Flip to a random flashcard and have students say the letter name of the note on one beat and have them play the correct note inside of the C major pentascale with the left hand.

  • Give students comments on their left hand playing technique, highlighting exemplary to the rest of the class.
