PREPARATION

  • Watch the diatonic chord progression video as a class.

  • Ask the class questions about what the different letter names are for the diatonic chords in C major. ie What is the IV in C?

  • Write a chord progression as a class following the chord progression writing rules and play the bass notes for the class.

  • Have students write their own chord progression and play some student generated chord progressions on a chordal instrument that you feel comfortable playing for the class.

  • Highlight the range of the bass instrument and how to write in octave numbers in beat maps.

  • Listen to the template audio for the project and have students write a drum groove.

  • Give students time to write a chord progression using the chord progression organizer.

  • Have students record their drum groove and bass line.

Assessment

  • Read through student’s drum grooves and give suggestions on how to elevate their groove if necessary.

  • Make sure the chord progressions in the chord progression organizer follows the chord progression rules.

  • Check that the drum groove and bass line are rhythmically linked, that the same rhythm is used for all four measures, and that the correct octave numbers are given for each note’s attack.

  • Conference with the student in person about their drum and bass recording.

  • Assess the recording against the rubric and make sure that the notes are quantized and that the ends of the notes are trimmed to the correct count.
